{"id":545,"date":"2022-09-08T13:52:36","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T13:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/?page_id=545"},"modified":"2023-09-07T11:19:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T14:19:20","slug":"tactile-walking-surface-indicators","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/exteriors-and-interiors\/tactile-walking-surface-indicators\/","title":{"rendered":"Tactile Walking Surface Indicators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/code><code><abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s, also known as detectable warning surfaces or tactile attention indicators, are standardized walking surfaces that convey information to people impacted by blindness through texture and, occasionally, sound.<\/p>\n<p>TWSIs were invented in Japan in 1965. They are now used around the world to help blind or vision-impaired persons travel independently. At present, TWSI patterns and installation methods vary from country to country.<br \/>\nWhile TWSIs should be effective for blind or vision-impaired persons, attention should also be paid to their surface structure and materials in order to<br \/>\nensure that all pedestrians, including those with impaired mobility, can safely and effectively negotiate them. Their edges should be bevelled to decrease the likelihood of tripping.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_287\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-287\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig3-3-2.jpg\" alt=\"A guidance TWSI consisting of elongated bars arranged in a linear pattern.\" width=\"269\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig3-3-2.jpg 269w, https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig3-3-2-168x300.jpg 168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A guidance TWSI consisting of elongated bars arranged in a linear pattern.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are two types of <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/exteriors-and-interiors\/tactile-walking-surface-indicators\/attention-tactile-walking-surface-indicators\/\">Attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s<\/a> - sometimes called warning <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s, call attention to key hazards such as the start of a staircase or the edge of a platform.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/exteriors-and-interiors\/tactile-walking-surface-indicators\/guidance-tactile-walking-surface-indicators\/\">Guidance <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s<\/a> - also known as wayfinding <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s, provide information about the direction of travel through open spaces. They are designed to guide a person on a designated path of travel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should be colour contrasted to the surrounding walking surface. The preferred colour for attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s is safety yellow (Munsell Colour System: hue 5.0, chroma yellow 8.0\/12). Also effective is using a light colour on a dark ground surface or a dark colour on a light ground surface. To clearly differentiate warning information from guidance information, safety yellow should not be used for guidance <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s. For more information, refer to the section <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/design-basics\/colour-and-brightness-contrast\/\">Colour and Brightness Contrast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s are installed as pre-manufactured panels or surface-mounted onto an existing ground or floor surface, the panels should have bevelled edges. The base surface of the <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr> panels should be no more than three millimetres above the existing surface. Surface-mounted installations are not ideal and should only be considered when cast-in-place or recessed installations can\u2019t be achieved.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should always be attached firmly to prevent edges from lifting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWSIs, also known as detectable warning surfaces or tactile attention indicators, are standardized walking surfaces that convey information to people impacted by blindness through texture and, occasionally, sound.
