In interior environments with exceptionally smooth surfaces, such as polished concrete or terrazzo, the minimum height of four millimetres is preferred.<\/li>\n<li>The diameter of the top of the flat-topped domes or cones should be between 12 and 25 mm.<\/li>\n<li>The diameter of the lower base of the flat-topped domes or cones should be 10 mm (+\/- 1 mm) more than the diameter of the top.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The spacing between adjacent flat-topped domes or cones should be adjusted depending on their size, as shown in the table below. The larger the individual domes\/cones, the more distant the space between them:<\/p>\n<table id=\"table3-01\" class=\"clear centerTD tableCSS\">\n<caption>A table showing the spacing between domes\/cones, based on their top diameter.<\/caption>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th class=\"center\">Top diameter of flat-topped domes or cones (mm)<\/th>\n<th class=\"center\">Spacing between the centres of adjacent domes or cones (mm)<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>12<\/td>\n<td>42 to 61<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>15<\/td>\n<td>45 to 63<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>18<\/td>\n<td>48 to 65<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>20<\/td>\n<td>50 to 68<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>25<\/td>\n<td>55 to 70<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>A top diameter of 12 mm is the optimal size of domes or cones for people impacted by blindness to detect and distinguish through the soles of their footwear.<\/p>\n<p>Attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should be used at the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Platform edges<\/li>\n<li>Ferry dock edges<\/li>\n<li>Edges of reflecting pools and fountains that are unprotected at ground level<\/li>\n<li>Tops of stairs, at landings where there is a door leading onto the landing<\/li>\n<li>At landings longer than 2,100 mm where there are no continuous handrails<\/li>\n<li>Both sides of ground-level railway crossings<\/li>\n<li>Curb ramps and depressed curbs<\/li>\n<li>Unprotected edges with a drop-off greater than 250 mm in height<\/li>\n<li>Where a pedestrian path of travel intersects with vehicular trafic such as at raised sidewalks or parking lot entrances where no slope into a driveway exists<\/li>\n<li>Unprotected edges where the slope down is greater than 1:3 (33 per cent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-363\" src=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kinesik_logo.png\" alt=\"Kinesik Logo\" width=\"137\" height=\"70\" \/><br \/>\nAttention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s used on curb ramps at an intersection. The TWSIs are bright yellow, in contrast to the adjacent concrete and asphalt ground finishes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s used on platforms, ferry docks and other drop-offs should be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>600 \u2013 650 mm deep<\/li>\n<li>Located at the edge of the drop-off<\/li>\n<li>Running the full length of all unprotected platform\/dock edges that border the drop-off<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information, refer to our sections on <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/exteriors-and-interiors\/platform-edges\/\">Platform Edges<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/exterior-design-elements\/transit-facilities\/\">Transit Facilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At stairs, attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should commence one tread depth back from the leading edge of the nosing at the top step and extend across the width of the stairs. The attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr> alerts a person with blindness that there is a set of stairs ahead and to seek the support of a handrail for safe navigation. The depth of the <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s used at the top of stairs should be 600 \u2013 650 mm. For more information, refer to our section on <a href=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/index.php\/design-needs\/exteriors-and-interiors\/stairs\/\">stairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At railway crossings, attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should be located so that the edges of <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s are 1,800 \u2013 4,600 mm from the centre line of the nearest rail. Attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should be installed in addition to any mechanical barriers that are activated with the arrival of trains.<\/p>\n<p>Attention <abbr>TWSI<\/abbr>s should be provided across the entire width of a curb ramp or depressed curb (exclusive of flares). They should be set back 150 \u2013 200 mm from the curb\u2019s edge and extend 600 \u2013 650 mm in the direction of travel.
