In addition, an <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> may provide information to help a person with blindness travel in a straight line across a street or roadway.<\/p>\n<p>All intersections with traffic control signals should be augmented with <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> devices to help with accessible travel for people impacted by blindness.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> devices should be capable of activation 24 hours a day. In general, the time provided for crossing at any intersection or crosswalk, regardless of the presence of an <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr>, must be programmed to be long enough to accommodate people who may walk at a slower pace, according to this formula: at least 1.2 seconds of crossing time provided per 1,000 mm of crossing distance.<\/p>\n<p>While extending the crossing time universally will enhance walkability for pedestrians who may not walk as quickly as others, cities around the world are beginning to implement smart technology.<\/p>\n<p>These systems have the capability, when implemented, of providing a custom solution activated by a transit card or device which extends crossing signals based on individual preference or needs.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CNIB<\/abbr> Foundation encourages municipal planners to bare these capabilities in mind when sourcing new traffic control systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=II2LBmns4bs\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This video demonstrates a possible solution which may meet the below specifications<\/a>.<br \/>\nPlease note that CNIB is unaware of any similar installations anywhere in Canada or the United States. However, the viability of such an APS is highly recommended and as such, CNIB would be supportive of any research in Canada to explore the viability of such installations.<br \/>\nEmploy <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> systems as follows:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"als\">Acoustic Locator Sound<\/h2>\n<p>An acoustic locator tone should be used to indicate the presence of an <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> and its push button. The acoustic locator tone should be audible at no more than 3,700 mm from the push button, or at the closest building line, whichever is closer. The tone should sound no longer than 0.15 seconds and repeat every one to two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The sound-pressure level of an acoustic locator should be between 30 and 90 dB, automatically adjusted to be two to five decibels above ambient sounds.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"active\">Activating an <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> devices should be activated using one of these methods:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS is automatically activated following the same cycles as crossing signals;<\/abbr>\n<\/li>\n<li>A pedestrian is required to manually activate the <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> by pressing a button;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If manually activated, then activation should only require a single press, not pressing and holding the activation button.<\/p>\n<h3>Confirmation of Activation<\/h3>\n<p>An audible, visual and vibro-tactile (vibrating) confirmation should be provided to indicate the system has been successfully activated by the push button.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vibro\">Acoustic and Tactile\/Vibro-walk Signal<\/h2>\n<p>An audible, visual and vibro-tactile walk signal should indicate when it\u2019s safe to cross the street.<\/p>\n<p>The audible walk signal should be composed of multiple high and low frequencies, with the principal frequencies between 500 and 1,000 Hz with higher harmonics. It should sound during the entire walk cycle. The walk signal should be distinct for each direction of travel. Additionally, walk signal voice messages can be provided, according to the principles outlined by the <a href=\"http:\/\/tac-atc.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transportation Association of Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The walk signal volume at the point of departure should be carefully controlled to ensure it\u2019s loud enough for someone at the departure curb to hear it properly. Unless sound beaconing is used, it should be automatically adjusted to be two to five decibels louder than the ambient noise level.<\/p>\n<p>Take care to ensure that for people with hearing loss, the audible signal won\u2019t be confused with other sounds, such as birds chirping.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"confirm\">Confirmation of direction of travel<\/h2>\n<p>A tactile, colour-contrasted arrow should unambiguously indicate the direction of travel associated with any push button.<\/p>\n<p>The name of the street to be crossed should be made available in uncontracted braille, raised print characters and an audible format. Braille and raised print characters should be located on or near the push-button assembly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_333\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-333\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-333 \" src=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig4-2-4-1-769x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a pedestrian crossing with a push button that incorporates a tactile arrow to indicate the direction of crossing and a tactile map showing the lane configuration along the crossing route.\" width=\"454\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig4-2-4-1-769x1024.jpg 769w, https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig4-2-4-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig4-2-4-1-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/clearingourpath.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fig4-2-4-1.jpg 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo of a pedestrian crossing with a push button that incorporates a tactile arrow to indicate the direction of crossing and a tactile map showing the lane configuration along the crossing route.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> can also employ other features to unambiguously indicate the direction of travel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sound beaconing of the acoustic walk signal assists people in establishing and maintaining a straight line of travel across the road.<\/li>\n<li>Careful placement of the <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> push button within the width of the crosswalk indicates the direction associated with it (for more information see Push-button location, below).<\/li>\n<li>A tactile map shows the lane configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"button\">Push-button location<\/h2>\n<p>An <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> push-button pole should meet these guidelines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place it adjacent to a clear level ground surface that\u2019s stable, firm and slip resistant within 300 mm of the push button. This may be adjacent to or part of the pedestrian sidewalk.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a high-contrast ratio information sign, mounted above the push button, with the face of the sign parallel to the crossing route.<\/li>\n<li>Mount the push button on the pole at a height of 1,000 &#8211; 1,250 mm.<\/li>\n<li>Place the push button on the side of the pole facing the pedestrian waiting area. Its face should be parallel to the associated crosswalk.<\/li>\n<li>Locate the push button near the extended crosswalk line that\u2019s farthest from the movement of parallel traffic. Set the <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> back no farther than 600 mm from this line.<\/li>\n<li>In urban environments, locate the push button close to the curb, as appropriate for the environment. In suburban environments, locate it farther back to avoid damage from vehicles tracking across the corner. In these instances, locate the push button between 1,000 and 3,000 mm from the curb line of the roadway (as measured from the pedestrian walking path) to ensure accessibility of the push button from the pedestrian waiting area<\/li>\n<li>If there are two <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> buttons on the same corner (i.e., two separate directions of travel), separate them by at least 3,000 mm.<\/li>\n<li>In some locations, circumstances may dictate the placement of <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr> push buttons for two directions of travel on a single pole (a situation to be avoided wherever possible). If this is necessary, place each push button on the side of the pole facing the pedestrian waiting area. Align the face of each unit to be parallel to the associated crosswalk.<\/li>\n<li>Snow collected in snow removal shouldn\u2019t be piled at the base of poles where <abbr title=\"accessible pedestrian signal\">APS<\/abbr>s are mounted. It should be piled on the far side of poles to ensure an unobstructed path of travel.
