The original Clearing Our Path

The CNIB Foundation developed the first print edition of “Clearing Our Path” in 1999 to address the need for information on creating accessible environments for people who are blind. CNIB’s recommended guidelines were developed based on 20 years of providing universal design consulting expertise in Canada, and our long history dating back to 1918. We were well positioned to provide this expertise as the only national organization providing community-based support, knowledge and a national voice to ensure Canadians who are blind or partially sighted have the confidence, skills and opportunities to fully participate in life. Since its release, “Clearing Our Path” has become an invaluable tool for architects, designers, building owners, planners, standards bodies and others interested in making indoor and outdoor spaces universally accessible.

The second edition of “Clearing Our Path” provided updated information based on new research, new international standards, emerging technology and universal design principles. It incorporates changes to the National Building Code of Canada and various Canadian Standards Association standards, as well as international best practices.

In 2016, “Clearing Our Path” is available online for the first time. Our hope is that by sharing this expertise, the built environment will become more accessible to everyone.
